You are dissatisfied with your current job and are looking for a new one. At first you are hopeful. With your skills and experience, you will find a better job in no time. But after a few days of searching for job boards and applying for jobs that you really aren’t enthusiastic about, you get frustrated. Why don’t there seem to be any good job opportunities? How do you find the right job for you in such a competitive job market?

If you are referring to this struggle, you are definitely not alone. A recent FlexJobs survey found that nearly half (48%) of job seekers are frustrated while looking for a job because they don’t seem to be finding the right jobs. So what can you do

Here are three tips to follow if you are frustrated with the lack of good job opportunities in your job search.

1. Create an interview bucket list

As a professional, you need an interview bucket list – a list of 10-20 companies you’d like to work for. This also applies if you are not actively looking for a job. Are you enthusiastic about a company’s product or service? Do you feel connected to your mission? As an organization, can you relate to its values and beliefs? Think about these questions as you make your list.

Once you have an interview bucket list, you can conduct a targeted job search that has a direction and purpose beyond just “job hunting”. Simply put, your job search will have a foundation on which everything else is built. It will make the job search and application process so much easier.

For example, let’s say a company on your interview bucket list has a job posting that you’re interested in. When you write your disruptive cover letter, your connection history will make you stand out from other applicants and you will ultimately get the hiring manager’s attention. And chances are they’ll want to call you.

2. Don’t rely on job boards

Job seekers get frustrated with the lack of good job opportunities

Job seekers often rely solely on job boards to find employment opportunities. This isn’t the most effective way to find a job, let alone a good one.

If you do decide to start looking for a new job, don’t make job boards a main part of your job search strategy. Everyone else does, and not only is competition fierce, but most of the “good” job vacancies are never actually posted on these sites (ever heard of the hidden job market?). Companies prefer to publish jobs internally before using a job board to find qualified candidates. You can also contact previous applicants whose résumés are already available.

Focus your efforts on gaining access to the hidden job market that is usually where the best job opportunities can be found. As? That brings us to our final point …

3. Network on your dream business

A targeted and proactive job search that is based on an interview bucket list and does not rely on job boards is not complete without a clear networking strategy. If you ask a frustrated job seeker if they prioritized networking when looking for a job, they will likely mutter “no”. And there is the problem.

Networking is essential to your job search. This is arguably the most important factor in getting job opportunities and advancing your career. To find a good job opportunity, network with your dream companies, the companies on your interview bucket list. Contact current employees of these companies. Connect with them and start a conversation. Explain why you would like to work for their company one day, but don’t ask for a job or a favor. Just focus on expanding your professional network and adding value as best you can. If a position becomes vacant at one of your bucket list companies, you are likely the first to contact.

At the end of the day, it’s all about who you know.

If you are frustrated with a lack of good job opportunities, don’t give up. If you follow these three tips, you can can and will you will find the right vacancies. Test your new job search strategy today and finally get the good job you’ve always wanted!
